Cycling in London, Westminster, & Pimlico

As Pimlico is so Central within London, you can probably cycle to anywhere that you might want to get to within 30 mins!

Cycling is a convenient and low cost way to get around and lets you fit exercise into your daily routine. It is recommended to ride a bike for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week to achieve the minimum level of weekly physical activity. Half of all car journeys made in suburban London are less than two kilometres – easily within walking or cycling distance. A 20-minute bike ride will burn off a whole pack of wine gums, while a 30-minute walk is equivalent to a small glass of wine. It’s also a practical way to help tackle climate change. Over the past year the number of cyclists in London has grown by 83 per cent! Recent figures By TfL reveal that almost half a million journeys are made by bike in London every day.

Westminster Council is aiming to get more Londoners on their bikes by rolling out a free programme of cycle safety training across the city. The specially designed programmes are taught by qualified instructors and are open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Westminster. Adults can benefit from three hours of training including specific lessons on how best to negotiate a T-junction and multi-lane roads to riding London’s one way streets and cycling in the wet weather. Intensive one-to-one lessons are also available. The council believes it may have more stands than any other local authority in the country, totalling 5000 in all. A batch of 25 new stands were recently installed near the Royal College of Arts in Kensington Gore. Elsewhere, the single biggest bike stand is based at the London School of Economics near Aldwych which boasts 100 cycle spaces. There are many cycle stands close to Pimlico Flats or you can identify stands for any area from this link .

You can take folding bikes free of charge  on any part of the underground at any time. Non-folding bicycles can be taken free of charge on the Circle & District line from Victoria outside peak times which are 07:30 – 09:30 and 16:00 – 19:00, Monday to Friday, except for public holidays and during rush hour in the opposite direction to the majority of travellers. London Buses will take folding bicycles at the discretion of the driver.

The Westminster Cycle Campaign has regular meetings & organised rides, & has a host of useful information.

This blog hosts a list of stolen bikes, photographs and descriptions of known thieves and sellers of stolen bikes, and ways to protect your bike from theft.
