Motorists are advised to avoid driving in central London and around venues and also to be aware that Olympic Route Network (ORN) restrictions apply from Wednesday 25 July.

On Triathlon road event days, Hyde Park Corner and neighbouring roads will be closed from early morning and you will not be able to drive close to or across the race routes. If you intend to travel in the area, you are strongly advised to plan ahead.

The Triathlon technical rehearsal will take place on Thursday 2 August; Hyde Park Corner and other roads will be closed from 0330 until 0845.

Saturday 4 and Tuesday 7 August

The Women’s Triathlon will take place on Saturday 4 August and the Men’s Triathlon will take place on Tuesday 7 August. Athletes will complete a seven?lap, 40km bike ride on roads between Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park. The roads on the Triathlon race route will be closed from 0200 and will reopen when it is safe to do so.

On Saturday 4 August, the Men’s 20km Race Walk will also take place; this finishes between Constitution Hill and The Mall. These roads will already be closed as they are within the Central London Zone.

The Olympic Route Network (ORN) will operate during these events. Some parts of the ORN will be closed and an alternative ORN route will be in place.

London is Leaving Town for the Olympics

A recent survey conducted by holiday home specialists Owners Direct has revealed that 50% of Brits in the South East who plan to, or have already rented out their homes for the Olympics are looking to escape the UK for a Mediterranean break. Owners Direct has also seen almost a 90% rise in enquiries during 2012 to date for the London area and an 80% increase for surrounding areas such as Essex.

As a result of increased demand for properties near the Olympic sites next summer, Owners Direct have launched a service specifically to cater to the needs of those looking for short term let options. Launched at the end of October last year, it offers landlords a cost effective way to market their homes to people all over the world who are looking for accommodation during the Olympics.

With over 50% of people who took part in the study who own a holiday home in the South East already having received enquiries for the 2012 games, Marketing Manager Angela Southall said the company was keen to extend their offering to people who didn’t need to list their properties for a long period of time.

“We have launched a service that will allow homeowners who wouldn’t normally rent out their properties to do so for a short time. “We’ve been amazed at how many people are willing to pack up their lives and find a roof elsewhere for a few weeks!” says Angela Southall.

Home owners can take advantage of the two month trial listing, available exclusively to UK owners, by visiting www.ownersdirect.co.uk quoting UK49

How Pimlico Residents use the Internet

Pimlico IT
Westminster Council did a survey of our technological habits as part of a plan to justify an expansion of its digital services. There are some interesting insights into the average Pimlico Resident’s life in the survey, but my own concern is that WCC seem to have little concern for customer service, success for WCC involves passing it’s problems on to it’s residents. A future blog will analyse WCC’s own use of IT, meanwhile here are the results of their analysis of OUR use ………….

  • Pimlico residents exceed national averages in all areas of digital and wireless communication:
  • Nationally  30 per cent own smartphones but 64 per cent of Pimlico residents own one.
  • 6% of the UK own a tablet against 19 per cent of residents in Pimlico.
  •  86 per cent of residents are connected to the internet at home, rising to 94 per cent in the 16-44 year age bracket.
  • Online interactions between residents and the local authority cost the Council only 17p per interaction, whereas a face-to-face interaction between the Council and a resident can cost £14.
  • Online interactions cost the taxpayer only 1% of the cost of a face-to-face transaction.
  • WCC have  a deal with O2 to provide free WiFi in time for the Olympics, and of course Pimlico Flats provides wired and wireless internet access to tenants free of charge.

Clearly Pimlico Residents make a much greater use of the Internet, Mobile Computing, and Social Media, than the Nation as a whole.

A statement by the Council says “The Council can harness this by expanding the online options for contacting the Council, improving its website, and stepping up its digital publications to save real money for the taxpayer. WCC  has already shown its commitment to becoming the UK’s most digitalized city, and we will continue to expand our online options to provide excellent value for money to our residents.”

Fine words, but what is good for the council isn’t necessarily good for the residents …….

Smashing Plumber for your Pimlico Flat Leak

If you have a leak in your Pimlico Flats home all you need to do is call or e-mail our maintenance service and it will be fixed the same day. Other landlord’s tenants do not always have the same onsite service, but if their landlord calls Pimlico Plumbers they may have their leak fixed by Olympics hopeful Ruth Raper.

Ruth was quoted in The Sun “It’s funny seeing people’s reactions when I tell them I am a boxer and a plumber. Blokes don’t believe me when I tell them. They think it is a wind-up. They think it’s all a bit weird.” I think Ruth will be getting used to fame by now. A question in my mind is whether The Sun chose to do an article about Ruth because she is a great plumber, a great boxer, or a very pretty girl?

Whatever motivated The Sun, lets compliment Pimlico Plumbers on their sponsorship of Lynn AC Boxing Club who train Ruth. They are Britain’s oldest continuing amateur boxing club, founded in 1892 in a café in London’s Borough high street. Danny Williams, best known as the man who knocked out Mike Tyson in four rounds, is one of the most well-known boxers to emerge from the club. He became British Heavy Weight Champion in 2000 and maintained his title until 2004. He later regained his British title in 2007 and defended it until May 2009.

London 2012 will be the first Olympic Games to feature women’s boxing, and Ruth has already been named in the provisional Team GB of seven women boxers and is expected to a main contender to take one of the three available positions to compete at the games. Ruth competes at 60kg lightweight division, she’s been boxing since the age of 14 and to boost her chances for selection for Team GB Ruth will split her time between a boxing training camp in Sheffield and her apprenticeship training with Pimlico Plumbers in London. Ruth will now spend four days a week at the Sheffield Camp and three days working at Pimlico. While in London, Ruth will train in the evenings at the Lynn AC Boxing Club in Camberwell.

Good luck Ruth, and well done Charlie Mullins for training an Olympic Athlete and a Plumber – Pimlico needs both!
