Pimlico Riots – London Tenants Arrested & Evicted

Rioter

Rioter

An example rioter – click on the picture to see more and if anyone recognises individuals in the photographs or has any information about the violence and disorder that has occurred they should contact the Major Investigation Team on 020 8345 4142. Alternatively anyone can report crime and provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police carried out raids on four flats in Pimlico and two 18-year-old men and a 29-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of burglary and violent disorder on the Churchill Gardens Estate. Searches of their properties recovered £1,600 in cash and thousands of pounds worth of Hugo Boss clothing taken from the Hugo Boss store in Sloane Square which was looted on Monday night.

A number of Councils and Housing Associations in London, Manchester, Salford and Birmingham say that they intend to evict tenants involved in rioting (and Grant Shapps has jumped in to back them, as has David Cameron)

A prayer vigil will be held from 2pm to 4pm today at Methodist Central Hall, in Storey’s Gate, in response to the current civil unrest. Given the national mood about the rioters they are going to need every prayer they can get.

Westminster City Council Property Investment Manager Suspended

An article in Property Week reports that the officer responsible for Westminster City Council’s investment properties has been suspended pending an internal investigation – for legal reasons the details of the allegations are not reported, although the officer is named as Alistair Rudd, one of the council’s most senior employees.

Rudd has been responsible for several significant property and lease disposals for the council:

  • The sale process for North Wharf Gardens, the former site of North Westminster Community School, under offer to Zog Group for around £120m.
  • Westminster council’s car parks disposals, which included the sale of Chiltern Street Car Park in Marylebone.
  • Deciding on an occupier for Old Marylebone Town Hall.
Clearly the news is of major import, and will attract much attention over the coming weeks.

Pimlico Development (Chelsea Barracks)

Chelsea Barracks

Chelsea Barracks

Last night (Monday 20th June)  Westminster Council gave consent to an outline master plan for the scheme, which will see the 13-acre property turned into up to 448 houses and flats, a sports centre, shops and a health centre. The plans will now be referred to Mayor of London (Boris Johnson) for approval before detailed designs are submitted.

Two years ago the Prince of Wales intervened over plans for the site objecting to a previous design by the award-winning architect Lord Rogers, and consequently in June 2009, the developer Qatari Diar Real Estate withdrew its planning application. Following the withdrawal of the planning application, Qatari Diar’s then-partner the CPC group (the Candy Brothers) launched a High Court action to get an early payment of £68.5 million after the scheme’s collapse, but the legal bid failed.

The development will include 123 affordable homes down the road in the old refuse docks and water treatment plant, and £78 million being contributed to the council’s affordable housing fund. The Grade II listed chapel on the site will be maintained.
