Emergency Short Term Accommodation for Travellers in London

Here’s a brilliant idea, & a demonstration of British generosity and kindness to strangers and foreigners. Spareroom.co.uk is a website which specialises in advertising rooms for lodgers in a homeowner’s property, and it has been flooded with offers after the website posted a request to users asking if they would be willing to offer their spare rooms to stranded travelers until the UK’s airports reopened. Hundreds of homeowners throughout the UK have been contacting flat and house share website to offer their spare rooms on short-term lets to people who have been unable to fly home because of the continuing Icelandic volcano ash cloud drama.

With the majority of major airports across the UK still closed, and with no clear end in sight, thousands of stranded holidaymakers and people on business trips, have been forced to extend their stays. For many visitors, they are faced with mounting costs for every additional day they have to remain in the UK. The situation is particularly bad for people stuck in Central London, where hotel room rates are extremely high and there is a scarcity of available rooms. Central London room rates are typically around £80 to £100 a night, which means an extra week stay at £100 a night could cost one person an additional £700.

With the average private room rent in London on average £134 a week, by staying in a spare room for a week rather than a hotel, stranded visitors could save at least 81% on accommodation costs. Pimlico Flats rent short term Studio Double Flats for £600/week which is about half the local rate, but we don’t have any availability until next week. The house does look nice. I love the colors and how well they’ve been blended to the design of the house. The price is reasonable. I’ve been looking for quite some time now for apartments for rent in Simpsonville.

  2. This is a fantastic opportunity for people visiting London or even the UK. On the other side of the coin this is also a great opportunity for lanlords. If you are a landlord and have a period of vacancy before a new long term tenant is due to move in, why not maximise your income. Rather than leave the property vacant, advertise it for short term lettings.

    Hi,

Can you recommend short term immediate accommodation in London, I was supposed to move into a new flat today and the land lords decided to change his mind and not let the room (Nothing to do with me) and I’m stuck whilst I look for a new room – Happy anywhere near a tube for 1-3 weeks whilst I find another room.

Good references and happy to pay today for the room, can view anytime.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    • Christian,

When we have vacancies between our long term lettings (which is nearly all the time) do short lets at £600/week. As it happens currently we are finishing a development and have a succession of brand new high quality Studios & 1 Bedroom Flats becoming available at £600/week. I do know of some local alternatives with equivalent standards of accommodation, but the normal pricing is around £180/night for similar accommodation. There might be deals available at slack periods, but during summer & Christmas and New Year you are lucky to find a vacancy at any price. If you are looking for a lower budget accommodation The White Ferry 200m from us does backpacker dormitory accommodation from around £20/night. The other central recommended cheap short term accommodation dormitory style is Piccadilli Backpackers from around £60/night.
