Student moves – the actual moving part

Are you a student looking to move closer to Uni, in the term time? If you are there are several options  and the most popular seems to be hire a van, and do it yourself. This takes time, money, driving licenses and people often forget to factor in the cost of extras like diesel!

Alternatively you can hire a courier company, to do it for you.  A courier is usually paid on the distance moved and not the amount of stuff that needs moving, they have a variety of vans, so if it really is just one bin liner a small van would be more suited, and a 7.5 tonne if you are moving everything but the kitchen sink!

Couriers have different insurances from a removal company, so it can be a cheaper or budget option to use a courier for your student move, than to use a removal company. If you are covered by your parents home contents insurance, that’s money you have saved. What better way to start term? (and keep in the parents good books!).

Using a courier may not suit your circumstances, so it’s best to check first and see what you get for your quote.

Some couriers are happy to collect at several destinations, so it may suit you to split the cost between two or three people, that way everyone saves. It helps if you are all going to the same end destination but that isn’t vital.

So, if you are looking to go back to halls of residence or rooms closer to Uni, have a look at the alternative student movers too. You may well pick up a bargain.

You can always ask (if you are able to drive) if there are any jobs going, often porters are required to work and help other moves at weekends, so its not just about getting your gear moved, it’s about getting good value and delivering it too.
